Chen-Yen Lai takes out National Robotics Innovation Competition

ABB and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE-A) have announced Chun-Yen Lai from RMIT University as the overall winner of the 2008 National Robotics Innovation Competition.

The recipient worked closely with furniture manufacturer, SK Furniture to develop a solution which used an industrial robot to automate the manufacturing of key components.

The competition was open to several universities around Australia and each received ABB’s Robot Studio software, valued in excess of $A50,000. Chun-Yen Lai now has the opportunity to complete three months paid work experience with the company’s robotics division.

According to the manufacturer, the competition aims to encourage university students to collaborate with industry to produce a design which uses a robotic cell or process. The design would have to be equally applicable in many areas of industry at both supplier and OEM level.

The entries were judged on key points such as generated savings, innovation, safety, and the likelihood of success.
